AIRBUS "Best Innovator Overall" Supplier Award 2019 (Defence and Space Business)

Kappa optronics receives the award as recognition for its innovation activities on the A330 MRTT Boom Enhanced Vision System.

Airbus revealed the winners of its best in class Defence and Space awards with an official ceremony at its 5thSupplier Conference on May 16, 2019. The four winners, among them Kappa optronics, were selected from the entire supply chain of more than 10,000 suppliers.

Barbara Bergmeier, Head of Operations at Airbus Defence and Space, said, “our suppliers are key to our global success and we are pleased to have the opportunity to recognise the top performers on this stage and –in turn –further support our long term business relationships and performance.” The Best Innovator Overall award was presented to Kappa Optronics GmbH for their “highly engaged collaboration” with Airbus Defence and Space in the development of the new generation of cameras for the MRTT–the new generation tanker and strategic transport aircraft.

The tanker aircraft Airbus A330 MRTT (Multi-Role Tanker Transport) will be upgraded to improve its in-flight refueling operations, even at night. Since the project’s beginnings, camera and vision system provider Kappa optronics has been a key supplier for the Airbus A330 MRTT and its Boom Enhanced Vision System (BEVS®) that sets standards industry wide with regard to security and performance. The overall system design is tailored so that receiver aircraft pilots will be able to execute this highly complex and dangerous in-flight refueling process safely as well as ergonomics are significantly improved. Kappa’s expanded technology portfolio encompasses vision systems for day and night vision. The Airbus MRTT project offers the opportunity to decisively develop camera technology further, making its use more efficient for various air and ground applications. The entire team at Kappa optronics thanks Airbus for this great recognition!

Innovation Award 2012 Göttingen (together with Volkswagen group for digital rearview mirror/VW XL1)

The development partners Volkswagen Group and Kappa were awarded the Göttingen Innovation Prize 2012 for the digital side mirror in the VW XL1. Kappa's complex camera solution is integrated into the gullwing doors of the VW XL1 and completely replaces the conventional side mirrors.

As a development partner with Volkswagen, already in 2012 Kappa optronics has developed an innovative, complex camera solution that represented a technical breakthrough on an international scale. The goal was to develop a camera, eligible for certification under the German Road Traffic Ordinance, that can fully process the complex light relationships and physical operational demands of road traffic. Development concentrated first and foremost on the highly integrated construction of camera and optics, qualification for extreme environmental conditions including skillful use of the camera’s own waste heat and the utilization of Kappa signal processing far beyond the customary standards for cameras at the time. The final camera/monitor system fulfilled all legal requirements and served as an alternative to conventional rearview mirrors.
